Last year I decided to give a lot of homemade gifts. As I have discussed before, I have been canning goods for the last three years. My sister-in-law, Cathy, and I canned a whole bushel of pickles last year (yeah, we kind of over did it when ordering the pickling cucumbers!). When the pickles were complete and we discovered we had enough for an army, it was determined that everyone would receive pickles… I mean canned goods for Christmas!

My parents are always a challenge to buy gifts for; they have everything they need. Before my mom knew what her Christmas gift was, she told me “the best gift you could give me would be consumable goods”. Well mom, that is great beacause that is exactly what you are getting! My parents loved their gift basket full of canned goods. I also gave my co-workers and neighbors pickles…and other goodies too!
If you want to try your hand at canning, Pick Your Own has a lot of great tips and easy to follow directions. Also, look at yard sales or estate sales for the supplies. I just picked up a huge canning pot for $4 at an estate sale.
